You’ve finally chosen custom window treatments for your room…now you must decide inside mount or outside mount for your window treatments. Here are a few tips to help you decide how to mount your new custom window treatments and some important things to take into consideration.

Inside Mounts

Inside window mounts are a very common way to hang window treatments. Inside mounts are when the window treatment is installed within the window casing. This creates a clean finished look that highlights decorative trim around your windows. Inside mounts are also commonly done when the window has a deep sill that can be used as a shelf.

An inside mount may not be your best choice if the depth between the glass and window casing does not fit the new window treatment. If this happens your window treatment would then extend outside the casing and would not lie flush with the window frame.

To allow for a smooth operation inside mounts have a small space on each side of your window treatment that will let a small amount of light in. This can be remedied with room-darkening or blackout solutions. Hunter Douglas has the LightLock™ system, available on Duette® Honeycomb Shades, that feature innovative light-blocking channels for near darkness.

Outside Mounts

If you are looking for maximum flexibility in your window treatments, you should consider an outside mount. Outside mounts allow your window treatment to extend beyond all sides of your window. Outside mounts can help create the illusion of a larger window or could be the key to dressing an odd-shaped window. When choosing the outside mount ensure there are no obstacles in the way that could prevent the treatments from operating properly.

If light leaks are a concern, outside mounts will block out more than an inside mount. They will cover the entire window when closed. If you pair your outside mounted window treatments with blackout fabrics they are a great choice for home theaters and bedrooms or just extra privacy. One thing to consider is that outside mounts are often discouraged in high-traffic areas because the window casing is not there to protect the treatments like it would on an inside mount.

Hunter Douglas has so many options when it comes to window treatments. Potentially the most important decision you’ll make in this process is whether to choose an inside mount or outside mount for your window treatments. This decision affects the overall vibe and appearance of your space. Make a list of what you like and dislike about the mounting options in each space– some rooms will look better with inside mounts and others will feel more natural with an outside mount. Both are great options and will come down to personal taste and preference.
