window treatment and child safety

At Austintatious, we have our customers’ best interest in mind. Our design team is here to help you choose a window treatment that complements the interior of your home. Our installation team will take the necessary measurements and confirm that the fit is seamless. Our customer service team is there to guarantee your satisfaction throughout our process.

As blind and shutter experts, we feel it is our duty to educate homeowners on all aspects of the window treatment you have chosen to introduce into your home. We want you to feel comfortable operating your window treatment and confident that your children and pets are safe when near them.

Unfortunately, many homeowners do not know the risk that their current corded window treatments may pose to pets and young children. From 2012 to 2017, there have been 50 fatalities reported to CPSC that were related to window cord strangulation among infants and young children. As a result, the Window Covering Manufacturers Association announced a historic new window covering safety standard in January 2018, requiring a vast majority of window covering products sold in the United States and Canada to be cordless or have inaccessible or short cords.

For this reason, we suggest that parents, and pet parents, survey their current window treatments and take these precautionary measures:

  • Place any long-hanging cords out of reach
  • Remove any unnecessary dangling cords
  • Secure any continuous loops to the floor or wall

If you’d like to increase the safety of your current corded treatments, the Window Covering Safety Council offers a free Retrofit Kit that you can order straight to your home.

Another option, for peace of mind, is to go entirely cordless. The product line we carry, Hunter Douglas, offers a wide array of operating system options for enhanced child and pet safety. Homeowners have the option of cordless and motorized operating systems, retractable lift cords, cord tensioners and wand controls. They are all very easy to operate and do not pose a hazard to little ones who may be playing nearby.
